How to work with our online course system

Mylegalenglish’s online course system has been developed to allow clients gain the maximum improvement in their legal English in shortest period of time.

It will require effort but if you follow our system we can guarantee you results that will help you:

  • get better marks in your legal English exams;

  • allow you to successfully access the international career that you want

  • to perform better at work.

Ideally, each course segment should be studied over a seven-day period, with the exam at the end to be taken on the following day.

Thus a ten-segment course should be completed over a twelve week period. Of course this depends on how much time you have available and it may take longer if you have less time.

Each course segment is divided up into five parts covering the following areas:

Part 1 – Vocabulary & information

Part 2 – Grammar

Part 3 – Speaking practice

Part 4 – Translations

Part 5 – Advanced reading

Part 6 – Test

Lets look at each of these separate course parts in greater detail

Part 1 contains:

  • Interactive vocabulary list allowing students to learn the meaning of the technical vocabulary used in the course segment and to test their pronouciation

  • Audio presentation with slides of the area under discussion in the Chapter concerned

  • Text of the audio presentation

  • Text 1 – summary of information set out in the presentation for students with a lower standard in English with translated technical vocabulary. This section does not exist in all courses.

  • Text 2 – more indepth technical discussion of the area of law discussed in the audio presentation with translated technical vocabulary

  • Questions and answers text 1

  • Questions and answes for text 2

Each course segment should be studied over a seven-day period. Click below to see how each course segment should be studied

Study over a consecutive two-day period:

  • day-one: set aside a minimum period of two – three hours; and

  • day-two: set aside a minimum period of one – two hours.

Part One of each course segment should be studied in the following way:

  • vocabulary list Click on vocabulary list and listen to the words, repeating each of the words in turn. Go through the list of words a number of times (minimum three times) until you are happy that you understand what each word means and that you are happy with your pronounciation. Once this is done then

  • text Click text and read the text in Part 1. Tect in Part 1 is divided into two texts:

  • Text 1; and

  • Text 2.

If you have a lower level in English we advise that you first read Part 1, text one and then read Part 1, text two.

This text should be read a number of times. The vocabulary is available after the text and so if you have trouble understanding specific words in the text, it is possible to look at the vocabulary. Once you have read the text at least three times then

  • vocabulary list Click vocabulary list and listen to the vocbulary once again a number of times, also repeating the pronunciation of the words, then

  • presentation 1 Click Part 1 – text presentation and listen to the presentation of the text. Then read through the text of the presentation while listening if you do not understand. Then listen to the presentation again taking notes in English. It is very important that you try and take notes as by doing this you will have started to work through English and to use your new vocabulary. Once this is done then

  • break Take a break and the following day, over a period of two hours or more if necessary, listen to the:

  • vocabulary once again;

  • read through the text until you are happy that you know its content.; then finally one last time

  • listen to the presentation.

  • when you have done this attempt to do the exercises found immediately after both Text 1 and Text 2

If you have been smart enough to buy the online e book as part of our online course/e book bundle, you can reread the text as often as you want to ensure that you do not forget vital necessary vocabulary.

You have just finished Part 1, lets move on and do a little grammar

Study over a one-day period:

The grammar section, located in grammar corner is designed to allow students to brush up on their grammar. The aim of Mylegalenglish is to teach students technical legal English. The grammar section is not detailed enough to allow a student learn grammar from scratch.

The grammar section contains twenty different grammar sections. Go to grammar corner and click on a grammar section that you feel you would like to revisit. Very simply, go over the clearly presented rules and then attempt the grammar exercises.

OK so now the grammar is over, lets do something about your spoken English

Study over a one-day period:

  • set aside a minimum period of two – three hours.

English is a live language and confidence when speaking English is an essential part of any interentational career.

Part Three of each course segment has been developed to allow students to have:

  • a better understanding of oral English; and

  • confidence when speaking English.

Part Three should be studied in the following way:

  • listen to the conversation Click on conversation and listen to the conversation, developed for each course topic. The student should try to listen to the conversation once and then listen to it a second time taking notes. Once the student has done this, (s)he should then attempt to answer Question 1, Comprehension, found immediately after the conversation in the exercises section,

You can always read the text of the conversation If the student is unable to answer the questions or considers that there is part of the conversation that he/she did not fully understand, click on the text of the conversation and read through it then and listen to the conversation How to work with our online course system

  • Question 2, Speaking practice Listen to the the questions in Q.2 and develop suitable responses. If you have trouble understanding the questions or developing suitable answers in the time space provided, AND YOU PROBABLY WILL, then access the text of the questions in the exercise section and develop answers in writing. Once you have done this, relisten to the questions and answer them using the responses you have created, then

  • Question 4 Repeat the answers Move onto Q. 4, and listen to the suggested answers and repeat, then

  • Question 3 Develop your own question and answers Attempt Q. 3, and develop five other conversation couplets then …

  • Question 5 Complete Q. 5.

OK that is enough speaking practice, lets get down to some real work and do some translations

Study over a consecutive two-day period:

The translation section is made up of six short translation exercises:

  • three in English to be translated into your language;

  • three to be translated from your language to English.

Part Four should be studied in the following way:

  • on day-one, the student should translate the three text from English to your language. Once he has done this, (s)he should check the translations against the translated text provided by the editor.

  • on day-two, the student should translated the remaining three texts and upon completion, once again check his/her translation by comparing it with the translated text provided by the editor. The translated text can be located online or in your e book.

OK translations are finished, lets just see how good my (your) legal English is now by doing some advanced reading!

Finally after seven days of study, you are now ready to take the test.

The test is largely based on the text you have studied in Part One and so it is advisable to reread the Advanced text in Part One prior to taking the exam.
